Students guiding each other

Did You Know:

…that all businesses and service providers are required by law to make 'reasonable adjustments' so that disabled people are not treated less favourably than anyone else? (Disability Discrimination Act 1995 Part III.) Could this apply to you in your office, shop, healthcare setting, police station, taxi rank etc?

…that the Department of Health issued policy guidance which recommends that all Local Authorities (Social Services) should identify deafblind people in their area, assess their needs and organise the necessary help they require? (Social care for deafblind children and adults - policy guidance 2001) If you are a social worker, do you have the specialist skills to carry this out?

By training with Deafblind UK you could gain:

  • greater understanding about sight and hearing loss
  • the skills to communicate with a deafblind person
  • deeper insight into the challenges faced by deafblind people
  • new awareness of the potential of deafblind people
  • the knowledge of how to safely guide a deafblind person
  • more confidence about meeting disabled people in general
  • a nationally recognised qualification

As a result of your training and your assistance a deafblind person would gain:

  • the opportunity to communicate more easily
  • the freedom to get out and about more often
  • more confidence to participate in community life
  • easier access to social services, healthcare, shops etc
  • the respect they deserve from the general public
