LocationSri Lanka

This is a 10 day trip of a lifetime to an island rich in wildlife and scenic beauty!

Unawatuna Beach

For a small island Sri Lanka offers a variety of wonderful places to explore from the magnificent coastline and beaches to the tea plantations and ancient villages in the hills. You will discover a land steeped in history and blessed with near-deserted sandy beaches, lush rainforests and a welcoming people. From the dramatic mountain-top fortress of Sigiriya and the former capital Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka boasts a rich cultural heritage.

The Challenge

Stilt FishermanThe Challenge will involve 3 days helping the teachers and children at the Matara School for deaf, blind, and deafblind children in Unawatuna and a 3 day trek to the summit of Adam’s Peak to witness the spectaular sunrise.

The Matara School for deaf, blind and deafblind children

During the challenge you will spend 3 days assisting the teachers and children at the Matara School for deaf, blind and deafblind children. In the wake of the terrible 2004 tsunami many of the buildings and people in the Unawatuna region were left devastated - teachers and children at this School are just some of the people who need help rebuilding their lives. Working alongside local people you will either be helping to renovate and refurbish the School building and grounds, will spend time teaching and helping out with the children or will undertake other general environmental works that would benefit the local community.

Three Day Trek

Adam's Peak

The expedition will also involve a 3 day trek; the highlight of which will be an overnight camp at the summit of Adam’s Peak, a mountain so-called because 'Sri Pada' as it is locally known may be translated roughly as "the sacred foot" which refers to the footprint-shaped mark at the summit, believed by Buddhists to be that of the Buddha. Other traditions assert that it is the footprint of Adam, left by his first entrance into the world.

Beautiful Kandy

Here you will have the opportunity to take some time to stroll around Kandy Lake…visit the Temple of the Tooth…or enjoy an afternoon stroll around the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya. Nestled in hill country this quaint town exudes tranquillity and peacefulness and will give everyone the opportunity to gather their strength for the final part of this 10 day challenge.

Thank you!

Vol splashing One of the things you will take away from your Sri Lanka Challenge is a sense of fulfilment at having made a difference to the lives of the children and teachers at The Matara School, as well as helping to raise funds for Deafblind UK.
