Planning Your Visit

Planning a school visit to the National Centre for Deafblindness

The following information is provided to help you plan your visit to the National Centre for Deafblindness.

Planning a visit

It is your responsibility to ensure you have enough staff cover (staffing ratios are specified below, responsible sixth formers may be considered). Classes may be divided into two smaller groups – each with a designated member of staff. You may wish to divide the group yourself, otherwise this will be done on a random basis by ourselves. The minimum number of students in a group is 8, maximum number 30 (excluding teachers).

Please note:

If your group is between 8-10 students there will be no need to divide the group. We recommend the following minimum staffing ratios when visiting the National Centre:

KS 1: 1 adult to 6 students

KS 2/3: 1 adult to 10 students

KS 4: 1 adult to 15 students

Teachers accompanying students should carry a full list of the students visiting the National Centre and understand that they are in ‘loco parentis’ with responsibility for behaviour and discipline at all times.

Health and safety

The activities undertaken as part of your educational experience have minimal risk attached to them. However, where students are asked to simulate deafblindness by wearing blindfolds and ear defenders, to minimise the possibility of disorientation another child will always be asked to guide the ‘deafblind’ child and they will be accompanied or in close proximity to an adult, who will be asked to intervene if necessary. During these activities we will always endeavour to pair ‘like with like.

What to bring with you

Students will need to bring pens and pencils and a work book and suitable refreshments.

Facilities

The education room provides groups with a base to organise introductions and have lunch, breaks etc. A separate room is provided for coats and bags etc. We have a garden which students can use during lunchtime. We have ample parking which is free of charge.

Cancellation Policy

If you are unable to attend your visit to the National Centre you must provide at least 2 weeks notice, in which case all fees will be refunded. If this has not been possible for whatever reason the following charges will apply;

  • 7 to 14 days prior to visit: 10% of total amount due payable.
  • Less than 7 days prior to visit: 50% of total amount due payable.
