Introduction
Your students will receive a warm welcome to the National Centre for Deafblindness, a totally accessible environment that contains design features never before seen in one building. The students will be given a brief introduction to the National Centre and deafblindness by an educational co-ordinator before embarking on their designated activity.
Activity 5: In the kitchen.
In the kitchen. Students are introduced to our simulation kitchen. Using the eye pads and ear defenders students will undertake simple tasks in the kitchen. For example, they may be asked to make a cold drink, butter a slice of bread or find something to wear from our washing machine, all without their sight and hearing. The educational co-ordinator comments on their progress whilst the other students observe. After each task we discuss how difficult the students found it and how different aids could be used to make life easier for someone who is deafblind.
What the students will learn
This activity provides students with an insight into the life of a deafblind person. They will learn how difficult very simple tasks become without two of your most important senses. They will learn to appreciate their other senses like touch and smell when identifying different food stuffs and objects. They will hear first-hand what life is like for a deafblind person and learn how important being independent is for someone with a disability.
More about this activity:
This activity forms part of the ‘tutored programme’ and can be undertaken on its own or in conjunction with other deafblind awareness activities.
