Healthcare for deafblind people in Britain

Deafblind person communicating with a doctor and nurseDeafblind UK is one of the oldest sensory charities in the UK uniquely governed by people with both a sight loss and a hearing loss, together. This year we are 80 years old and because 2008 is also the 60th birthday of the NHS we decided to focus on health during Deafblind Awareness Week. By talking and listening to deafblind people we realised that accessing healthcare is one of the most important issues they, like many of us, face on a daily basis.

Deafblind UK wants to raise as much awareness as possible of the 3 health related reports we formally launched during Deafblind Awareness Week (please read the press release below to find out more).

If you are a health care practitioner and want to find out more about making your surgeries, reception areas and consulting offices more accessible for deafblind people please download them. Print copies of the reports are available from our Campaigns and Policy team on Tel: 01733 358 100.

"We live in a very different world now than in 1928. However, over the past 80 years we have managed to achieve a great deal for deafblind people but there is still so much more to do. I have been involved with Deafblind UK for a number of years and am proud to support an organisation which works with deafblind people to provide the practical and fundamental support that enables them to live happy and more independent lives.”
